Every year since its founding in 2001, the Breast Cancer Education Association (BCEA) honors an individual or group for its contribution to the breast cancer community with the BCEA Award. This year, the BCEA has selected Sona Mehring, founder and CEO of CaringBridge, a non-profit that offers free protected websites for those facing a health event to easily communicate with loved ones and to receive support and encouragement.
In 1997, Sona Mehring created the first CaringBridge website during a friend’s high-risk pregnancy. Since then, hundreds of thousands of websites have been created, and CaringBridge authors, visitors and donors hail from all 50 states and 233 countries and territories around the world. Of all the cancer websites on CaringBridge, nearly one quarter are started by those fighting breast cancer.
“It’s an honor to be named the recipient of the BCEA award,” said Mehring. “Our organization’s goals are similar to that of the BCEA’s in that we are there to support those going through life challenges, whether it’s breast cancer treatment or any other health event.”
Mehring will be honored at the 13th Annual Breast Cancer Education Association’s Education Conference on Saturday, October 11 at the St. Paul RiverCentre.
“We are thrilled to honor Sona with this award,” said Ann Harris, co-founder of the Breast Cancer Education Association. “We know that many people going through breast cancer treatment and their loved ones turn to CaringBridge to share their journeys, and having that online support community makes a big impact.”
In 2013, Mehring was named one of the “75 Most Influential People of the Twin Cities” by Minnesota Monthly. She was also named one of the “Most Influential Women in Technology” by Fast Company. Mehring is a member of Women Business Leaders of the U.S. Health Care Industry Foundation, Minnesota Council of Nonprofits and the National Health Marketing Leadership Roundtable. Mehring is the author of Hope Conquers All: Inspiring Stories of Love and Healing from CaringBridge.
